Signs you need a dehumidifier
Summer in South Africa is nothing short of glorious, but it is not without a good dose of rain and humidity. Outside of uncontrollable hair issues, those who suffer from allergies and sinus find this time of year particularly challenging.
There are many triggers for allergy flare-ups including seasonal changes, dust, mold, and mildew but, allergies thrive in humidity, and this is not exclusive to our coastal regions. If you live or work in spaces with limited ventilation like a holiday rental, small workspaces, bathrooms, basements or kitchens, moisture is likely to build up and result in blocked noses, itchy eyes, sneezing, skin irritation or breathing difficulties.
Bianca Leonard, Marketing Manager of Solenco South Africa says, “allergies, sinus and breathing difficulties are the pits, not to mention mold build up and rotten smells at home or at your holiday house. But there is an effective and portable solution that reduces humidity levels, odors, skin irritation, dust build-up and creates an overall damp-reduced environment – a dehumidifier.”
Like a really clever vacuum cleaner, a dehumidifier breathes in air, removes all the moisture, and then breathes dry air out again.
Leonard says that allergy sufferers should be looking for dehumidifiers that are multi-purpose. “Solenco South Africa’s MeacoDry Arete One Dehumidifiers come with a medical grade H13 HEPA filter used to clean the air during dehumidification. They can also operate as a stand-alone air purifier throughout the allergy producing months or when excess moisture is not an issue in your home.”
Those who suffer with asthma know the difficulties of being in an area where the air is ‘heavy’ and hard to breathe in, something that may resonate with many Covid-19 patients who have experienced breathing difficulties. Air that is saturated with moisture is heavier, and air that is hot and humid, triggers an asthmatic response, which could also make your Covid-19 recovery that much harder. A dehumidifier acts to remove this excess moisture and humidity from the air, making it both lighter and dryer by up to 60%.
In drying the air, the dehumidifier also prevents mould from spreading and producing spores, and dust mites from breeding. Both of which can cause allergies such as asthma and nasal congestion, and that musty holiday home smell!
Dehumidifiers are not only great for improving the quality of air you breathe, they’re great for quick-drying your laundry, or keeping your clothes smelling fresh when on holiday at a coastal location, or during the rainy season.
